Does TriWest Cover Rehab?

Yes.

Covered for veterans and families

Yes, TriWest-administered coverage may help cover substance use disorder treatment when care is medically necessary and properly authorized. For TRICARE West beneficiaries, TriWest may be involved in referrals, authorizations, and claims. For VA Community Care, VA must authorize treatment before a Veteran receives covered care from a community provider. For eligible Veterans, one possible channel is VA Community Care. When VA determines that community care criteria are met, such as access standards, service availability, or clinical best interest, VA may authorize treatment with an approved community provider.

If your TRICARE card, VA referral letter, or authorization paperwork names TriWest, our admissions team can review it and help verify the next steps.

How VA Community Care Referrals Work

MISSION

VA Community Care

VA-authorized treatment with community providers when a Veteran meets Community Care eligibility criteria, such as access standards, service availability, or clinical best interest.

Under the MISSION Act, veterans can qualify for community care when VA facilities cannot provide the needed service, when wait times exceed access standards, or when the nearest VA facility is too far away. For many Iowa veterans needing residential addiction treatment, one or more of those conditions applies.

The path usually runs: eligibility confirmation with your VA care team, VA referral and authorization through the appropriate Community Care pathway, then admission to the approved community provider. Our admissions team helps Veterans review referral paperwork, communicate with VA staff when appropriate, and keep authorization steps moving as clearly as possible. If you are not sure whether you qualify, call us first; we will help you figure out the right starting point.

1

Confirm eligibility with your VA care team.

2

VA referral and authorization through the appropriate Community Care pathway.

3

Admission to Radix if approved and clinically appropriate.

Why Radix

Veteran Care at Radix: Addiction and Trauma Treated Together

For many veterans, substance use and post-traumatic stress are the same fight on two fronts. Treating one while ignoring the other is how relapse happens. Radix’s integrated dual diagnosis model treats addiction and co-occurring PTSD, depression, and anxiety with one clinical team under one treatment plan.

Our veteran residents also get what every Radix resident gets: medical provider-led detox with 24/7 nursing when needed, structured residential pathways of 30, 60, or 90 days, a step-down continuum through PHP, IOP, and continuing care with clinical relationships.

Trauma and addiction together

PTSD, depression, and anxiety are treated alongside substance use by one team under one plan, not referred out.

One roof, one team

Detox through continuing care lives in a single Cedar Rapids facility, with the same clinical relationships at every step down.

Referrals coordinated

We help coordinate with VA staff, TriWest/TRICARE representatives when applicable, and other authorization contacts so paperwork does not become a barrier to care.

What Will I Pay Out of Pocket?

Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan, not just your insurance company. Three numbers on your plan documents determine most of what you will pay:

01

Deductible

The amount you pay before your plan starts sharing costs. If you have already met part of your deductible this year through other medical care, your remaining responsibility shrinks.

02

Coinsurance or copay

Your share of costs after the deductible is met, usually a percentage of the allowed amount or a flat fee per service.

03

Out-of-pocket maximum

The most you can pay in a plan year. After you hit this number, your plan pays 100% of covered services. Many residents who complete a full continuum of care reach this cap, which means later levels of care often cost little or nothing.

When we verify your benefits, we walk you through each of these numbers for your exact plan, so there are no surprises. For VA Community Care, many Veterans owe little or nothing out of pocket, but VA copay rules can vary based on eligibility, service connection, priority group, and type of care.

Weekly therapy and relapse prevention for as long as it helps, the most independent level of ongoing clinical support.

Yes. TriWest administers VA Community Care and TRICARE West Region benefits that cover substance use disorder treatment, including residential care, when properly authorized. Our admissions team confirms your specific benefits and coordinates the authorization.
For VA Community Care, yes: care must be authorized through the VA, with TriWest processing the referral. If you do not have a referral yet, call us anyway. We will help you understand the eligibility criteria and coordinate with your VA care team to get the process started.
VA Community Care is a VA program that lets eligible Veterans receive care from approved community providers when VA cannot provide the needed service, access standards are not met, or community care is in the Veteran’s best medical interest. VA must authorize the referral before treatment for the care to be covered.
Depending on medical necessity and authorization: medical detox, residential inpatient, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and continuing care. We verify the full treatment path in a single pass.
Yes, and for veterans this is often the heart of the work. Our integrated dual diagnosis model treats PTSD, depression, and anxiety alongside substance use with one clinical team under one plan, using trauma-informed, evidence-based therapy.
Timelines vary with the VA referral process, which is why we get involved early and work directly with VA staff and TriWest to keep your referral moving. Call us and we will give you a realistic picture based on where you are in the process.
TRICARE covers eligible family members of servicemembers and retirees, and TriWest administers those benefits in the West Region. We verify family member eligibility and coverage the same way we do for veterans.
When care is authorized through VA Community Care, the VA pays the community provider. Depending on your VA copay status, your out-of-pocket cost may be minimal or nothing. We confirm the specifics of your authorization before you admit.
