Why Do Quad Cities Residents Travel West for Rehab?

Here is the quiet truth about the Quad Cities: people already travel for addiction treatment. University of Iowa physicians have said publicly that treatment options in the QC are limited and that many of the people they treat drive out of the metro to get care, and federal treatment locator data has shown only a handful of buprenorphine prescribers across Scott and Rock Island counties. The choice was never travel versus stay. It was travel versus wait.

So make the travel count. Ninety minutes west on I-80 buys you a full continuum campus: medical detox, 68 residential beds, PHP, and IOP under one clinical team, instead of a patchwork of waitlists split across two states. It also buys distance from the riverfront bars, the old neighborhoods, and the contacts on both sides of the bridge, which research says matters, because effective treatment addresses the person’s environment, not just the substance.[1]

And your family still gets there. Ninety minutes is a Saturday morning drive, not a flight. Parents in Bettendorf and spouses in Moline make family therapy sessions and are home for dinner.

A real continuum, finally

Detox through IOP in one place, instead of scattered waitlists across two states.

Both sides of the river

Iowa and Illinois residents alike; the bridge does not change our answer.

Distance from the old map

Ninety minutes between you and every spot in the QC tied to using.

Family within a morning's drive

Straight down I-80. Visits and family sessions stay realistic.

The Addiction Problem in the Quad Cities of Iowa

The Quad Cities loses a steady, stubborn number of neighbors every year. County records reported roughly 25 to 26 overdose deaths a year in Scott County across 2019 through 2021, with Rock Island County climbing to 28 in 2021, numbers that have refused to fall the way anyone hoped.[2] Meanwhile the supply got meaner: xylazine, the animal tranquilizer dealers cut into fentanyl, has already killed in Rock Island County, and Iowa has counted 16 xylazine-involved deaths statewide since 2021. Narcan does not reverse it.[3]

Statewide, Iowa’s picture reframed itself in 2024 when methamphetamine passed opioids as the leading cause of overdose death, a position state health data shows it still holds, with the DEA reporting a 54 percent jump in Iowa meth seizures in 2025 and warning that the current supply is unusually pure.[4]

None of these numbers care which side of the river you live on. If you or someone you love in the QC is using fentanyl, meth, or drinking past the point of choice, the full continuum answer is 90 minutes away: (319) 270-2890.

Addiction Treatment Programs for Quad Cities Residents

Radix Recovery is the full continuum the QC has been missing: medical detox, residential inpatient, PHP, IOP, and outpatient continuing care, one clinical team, one campus, 90 minutes from Davenport. Most Quad Cities residents begin with 3 to 7 days of detox and step down as they stabilize. Alcohol, fentanyl, meth, cocaine, benzodiazepines, xylazine-contaminated supply: these eight programs are how we treat all of it.

Alcohol Detox

Riverfront bar culture runs deep in the QC. When the drinking stops being optional, 3 to 7 days of medically monitored withdrawal with 24/7 nursing is the safe way off.

Alcohol Rehab

Structured alcohol rehab past detox: therapy, accountability, and treatment for the depression or anxiety the drinking was managing.

Drug Detox

Physician-led stabilization built for today’s contaminated supply: fentanyl, meth, and xylazine-adulterated drugs, with Suboxone and Vivitrol available where indicated.

Inpatient Rehab

30, 60, or 90-day residential pathways with 68 beds and structured daily programming, the level of care the QC metro has been short on for years.

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

4 to 8 hours of daily clinical work with off-site living, for people who are stable but not yet ready for the bridge home.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

3 days per week, 9 to 20 hours, structured for the transition back to work and family life in the Quad Cities.

Relapse Prevention & Continuing Care

A written plan for going home to the same metro with a different map: triggers named, supports scheduled, therapy continuing weekly.

Alumni Program

Radix community members stretch across eastern Iowa and western Illinois, and the alumni program keeps them connected long after discharge.

Serving Both Sides of the Mississippi

The Quad Cities are really five cities and two states, and addiction has never respected either boundary. Neither does our admissions team.

The Iowa Side: Davenport & Bettendorf Addiction Treatment Center

From downtown Davenport and the Village of East Davenport to Bettendorf, LeClaire, and Eldridge, the Iowa side of the metro has the shortest road to us: I-80 West is a straight 90 minute shot. Iowa insurance plans, including Iowa Medicaid, apply exactly as they would anywhere in the state.
Route: I-80 West to I-380 North at Exit 239, then north to Cedar Rapids. About 1.5 hours from Davenport.

The Illinois Side: Moline, Rock Island & East Moline Drug Rehab Center

Crossing a state line for treatment sounds complicated. It is not: Illinois residents cross the bridge, pick up I-80 West, and are here in well under two hours. Many Illinois commercial plans include PPO benefits that travel with you; we verify exactly what your plan covers in Iowa before you commit to anything.
Route: I-74 or I-280 to I-80 West, then I-380 North to Cedar Rapids. About 1.5 to 2 hours.
Also serving LeClaire, Eldridge, Blue Grass, Walcott, Milan, Silvis, and every river town in between. If you can find I-80, you can find us.

Quad Cities Drug Rehab Questions, Answered

Our campus is in Cedar Rapids, about 90 minutes west of Davenport on I-80, and we serve the entire Quad Cities metro on both sides of the river. Admissions, travel planning, and insurance verification are handled for QC residents on the first call.
Yes. Illinois residents cross the bridge, take I-80 West, and are here in under two hours. Many Illinois commercial plans carry PPO benefits usable in Iowa, and we confirm your exact coverage for free before you commit to anything.
About 75 miles and roughly 90 minutes: I-80 West to Exit 239, then I-380 North straight into Cedar Rapids. Bettendorf and LeClaire are similar; the Illinois cities add a few minutes for the bridge.
Treatment access in the QC has been documented as thin, with few residential options and a shortage of medication prescribers across Scott and Rock Island counties, so many residents already travel for care. Ninety minutes west gets you a full continuum campus and clinical distance from the riverfront routines tied to your using.
Yes. Alcohol is one of the most common reasons the QC calls us. Treatment typically opens with 3 to 7 days of medically monitored alcohol detox with 24/7 nursing, then continues through residential care, PHP, or IOP with the same team.
We treat fentanyl addiction daily, and our medical detox is built for today’s contaminated supply, including xylazine-adulterated drugs that Narcan cannot fully reverse. Detox is physician-led with 24/7 nursing, followed by MAT options like Suboxone and Vivitrol where clinically indicated.
We are in network with Wellmark BCBS, TriWest Healthcare Alliance, Midlands Choice, Cigna Healthcare, Health Choice, and Medical Associates, and we accept Iowa Medicaid through Wellpoint Iowa and Iowa Total Care. Illinois plans are verified case by case, free, on your first call.
Usually in under 24 hours from the first call. We verify insurance while you are on the line, complete clinical screening the same day, and set an arrival window around the 90 minute drive. Same-day arrivals from the QC happen regularly.
Yes. Family involvement is built into our model, and 90 minutes is close enough for parents and spouses to attend family therapy and weekend visits without hotels or time off. Our team keeps approved family members informed throughout.

Ninety Minutes From the River. A Full Continuum Waiting.

One confidential call covers it all: free insurance verification for Iowa or Illinois plans, a clinical assessment, and an arrival window built around I-80.
