What Is Faith-Based Rehab?
Faith Woven Into Recovery
Faith-based rehab is addiction treatment that incorporates the resident's faith into the recovery process. At Radix, that means a Christian-centered track: Bible study counseling, a scripture-grounded recovery curriculum, prayer where the resident wants it, and a community of fellow residents who share a faith framework for what recovery means.
Added, Never Instead Of
Faith-based rehab is not a replacement for clinical care. Medical detox, CBT and DBT, medication-assisted treatment, and integrated dual diagnosis care all stay. The faith is added; the clinical care stays. For adults whose faith is meaningful to them, integrating it into treatment is associated with better engagement and outcomes.[1]
The science of recovery is real, and so is the faith. Radix integrates the two rather than asking residents to choose between them.
What the Faith-Based Track Includes

Scripture-Grounded Recovery Work
The weekly small-group curriculum moves through the themes that carry recovery, grounded in scripture:
- The Curriculum
Surrender Foundation
Surrender as a spiritual practice and the foundation of early sobriety.
Identity Early
Identity and worth in Christ as a foundation addiction cannot define.
Confession & Amends Middle
The role of confession and making amends, in a theological framework.
Forgiveness & Grace Ongoing
Forgiveness of self and others, grace, and repentance in recovery.
Community & Purpose Toward discharge
The community of faith as recovery support, and calling and purpose after addiction.
The curriculum is broadly Christian, not denomination-specific, and accessible to residents from any Christian tradition.

Faith-Aligned Recovery, Without Clinical Compromise
Many adults of faith have not found a center that takes both their clinical needs and their faith seriously. We built that. Confidential admissions available 24/7.
Who the Faith-Based Track Is For
Residents who do not want faith programming receive the same evidence-based clinical care without the overlay. No penalty, no judgment.
- The Core Position
Integration, Not Substitution
The most important thing about the faith-based track is what it is not: prayer does not replace medication, and Bible study conversation does not replace licensed therapy. Both layers run together in one plan.
What Bible study Counseling Covers
Bible study counseling is a distinct discipline from clinical therapy, focused on the spiritual dimensions. It sits alongside licensed therapy, never in place of it, and covers:

Many adults with addiction also have a co-occurring condition, depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or ADHD. Faith alone does not treat a psychiatric condition. Residents in the faith-based track receive the same psychiatric assessment, medication management, and trauma-focused care as everyone else, with the faith curriculum added alongside. Our dual diagnosis treatment covers the integrated approach.

Frequently Asked Questions About Faith-Based Rehab
What is faith-based rehab?
Faith-based rehab is addiction treatment that incorporates the resident’s faith. At Radix, that means a Christian-centered track: pastoral counseling, a scripture-grounded curriculum, prayer for those who want it, and a faith-aligned community, added to the same evidence-based clinical care every resident receives, medical detox, licensed therapists, dual diagnosis care, and medication management where indicated.
Is faith-based rehab as effective as standard rehab?
For adults whose faith is meaningful to them, integrating it into treatment is associated with better engagement and outcomes. The key word is integration. Programs that keep clinical excellence alongside the faith work show outcomes comparable to standard programs; programs that substitute faith for clinical care do worse. Our model is integration, not substitution.
Does Christian rehab require you to be Christian?
No. Most residents in the faith-based track identify as Christian, but it is open to residents of any faith background who want a values-aligned experience and are comfortable with a Christian-centered curriculum. Residents who do not want it receive the same clinical care without the overlay, with no penalty and no judgment.
Does faith-based rehab still use medication and therapy?
Yes, and this is the most important point. Residents in the faith-based track receive every component of the full clinical program: medical detox, daily therapy with licensed clinicians, dual diagnosis care, medication management including Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), naltrexone, and acamprosate where indicated, and the full continuum of care.
What does Bible study counseling involve?
Pastoral counseling is a distinct discipline from clinical therapy, provided by someone with theological training plus pastoral counseling certification. It focuses on the spiritual dimensions, shame and forgiveness, identity and worth, calling and purpose, and integrating faith into daily recovery, and sits alongside, not in place of, licensed therapy.
Is faith-based dual diagnosis treatment a thing?
Yes, and it is exactly what we do for faith-based residents with co-occurring conditions. Faith alone does not treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or ADHD. Our faith-based track delivers the same psychiatric assessment, medication management, and trauma-focused care as the standard track, with the faith curriculum and pastoral counseling added alongside.
Does insurance cover faith-based rehab?
Yes. Insurance covers the clinical addiction treatment services, which we deliver to every resident regardless of track. The faith-based track adds pastoral counseling and scripture-grounded curriculum at no additional cost. Radix is in-network with Wellmark BCBS, TriWest, Midlands Choice, Cigna, Health Choice, and Medical Associates.
Where is Christian rehab available in Iowa?
Radix provides faith-based addiction treatment from our Cedar Rapids campus, serving residents from Iowa City, Marion, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Dubuque, Davenport, the Quad Cities, Des Moines, Ankeny, West Des Moines, Ames, Sioux City, and Council Bluffs. Our pastoral team also helps connect residents to a church or recovery ministry in their home city.
