Combat exposure, military sexual trauma, the cumulative weight of deployments, and the dynamics of reintegration produce PTSD profiles that benefit from clinicians familiar with the military context.[1] Standard PTSD treatment is the foundation; veteran-specific clinical fluency is what makes it land.
Alcohol use rates are elevated in the veteran population, particularly among adults with combat exposure and post-deployment readjustment difficulties.[2] Prescription opioid use that began with combat or service-related injury is a recognized pathway into opioid use disorder. The clinical team has to know these patterns to treat them well.
Civilian rehab typically runs through commercial insurance. Veteran rehab runs through VA Community Care, TriWest, Tricare, or direct VA referral under the MISSION Act.[3] A treatment center that does not understand the eligibility framework wastes the veteran's time.
The clinical foundation is the same evidence-based care. What changes for veterans is the trauma fluency, the recognized use patterns, and the payment pathway. Radix is built around all three.
Combat trauma is one of the strongest known drivers of substance use disorder in the veteran population. Adults with combat-related PTSD are significantly more likely to develop a substance use disorder, and roughly half of veterans seeking PTSD treatment also meet criteria for substance use disorder. The two are deeply linked: alcohol and opioids temporarily quiet the hyperarousal, intrusive memories, and sleep disruption that combat PTSD produces, and the substance use then deepens the underlying trauma over time. At Radix, combat trauma treatment is integrated into the addiction work, not deferred to aftercare. VA Community Care lets eligible veterans receive addiction treatment from approved community providers like Radix when the VA cannot provide it directly or within reasonable time and distance. Here is how the pathway runs:
A veteran qualifies when the VA cannot provide the service, cannot schedule it within wait-time standards, is beyond drive-time standards, or the VA care team decides community care is in the veteran's best interest. For substance use treatment, all four apply commonly.
A VA case manager refers the veteran as part of the VA care plan, or the veteran calls Radix directly and our admissions team coordinates with the VA care team to set up the Community Care authorization.
TriWest Healthcare Alliance manages the VA Community Care Network for Region 4, which includes Iowa. Because Radix is in network with TriWest, the authorization flows through cleanly.
Radix admits the veteran and delivers the treatment, with out-of-pocket cost typically zero or close to it. Our admissions line is (319) 270-2890.

Eligible veterans receive substance use disorder treatment directly through the VA at VA facilities, and eligible veterans receive treatment through VA Community Care at approved community providers like Radix Recovery when the VA cannot provide the care directly or within reasonable time and distance. The MISSION Act of 2018 expanded the Community Care pathway. Radix is in-network with TriWest Healthcare Alliance, which administers VA Community Care for Iowa.

Yes. Tricare covers substance use disorder treatment as a medically necessary service for active duty service members, retirees, and eligible family members who meet clinical criteria. Radix accepts Tricare for active-duty service members under Tricare Prime referrals and for Tricare Select members through standard authorization processes. Dependents who meet clinical criteria can use their Tricare benefits at Radix the same way. Our admissions team verifies Tricare benefits in under an hour.
The MISSION Act of 2018 expanded VA Community Care to give veterans more flexibility in accessing non-VA care when the VA cannot deliver it directly. For addiction treatment, the MISSION Act is the legal framework that makes a direct admit from a VA referral straightforward. Veterans whose VA care team identifies addiction treatment as a clinical need can be referred to Radix through this pathway, and our admissions team works directly with the VA referral source.
Veterans rehab at Radix differs in three ways. The trauma exposure, including combat, military sexual trauma, and deployment-related stress, benefits from clinicians familiar with the military context. The substance use patterns, including elevated alcohol use and service-related opioid pathways, are recognized clinically. Yes. Spouses and dependents of active duty service members and retirees who carry Tricare coverage and meet clinical criteria for substance use disorder treatment can use their Tricare benefits at Radix. The VA Community Care pathway is veteran-only, but Tricare opens treatment access for the rest of the military family. SAMHSA also recognizes family members as part of the broader military and veteran community.
Talk to your VA primary care provider, VA mental health provider, or VA case manager about substance use disorder treatment. They can initiate a Community Care referral if the VA cannot provide the care directly or within reasonable time and distance standards. Once the referral is generated, TriWest processes it and Radix admissions coordinates the admit. If you do not have an active VA case manager, you can call Radix directly and we will help coordinate with your VA care team.
